Biobanks
The Fiocruz Biobanks Network (RFBB) aims to organize storage and usage of human biological materials. The network, stablished by Fiocruz' Presidency and Vice-presidency of Research and Biological Collections in 2015, focuses on providing human biological materials and its associated data safely, with quality and guaranteing the investigations participants' rights for the institution's researchers. In face of the importance of sharing and reusing human biological materials, the RFBB stands as a strategic Fiocruz’s component for science development and innovation. Currently, It comprises five biobanks:
- Technology in Immunobiologicals Institute - Bio-Manguinhos (BBIO)
- Oswaldo Cruz Institute - IOC/Fiocruz (BIOC)
- René Rachou Institute - IRR/Fiocruz (IRR)
- Biobank Gonçalo Muniz Institute - IGM/Fiocruz (IGM)
- Biodiversity and Health Biobank - BBS-Fiocruz
As stated by Fiocruz, the mission of the RFBB is to stablish a collaborative public service network and to meet the evolving needs of public health research in Brazil, guided by the current ethical and regulatory precepts.
To better understand the practices of human biological material storage in Fiocruz and to identify possible knowledge gaps of researchers and other actors regarding biobanking activities, Fiocruz developed a situational survey about biobanking. The survey, available in Portughese and Spanish, is applicable to other institutions and can help them to assess biobanking practices within their settings to further support strategic planning on biobanks. The Biodiversity and Health Biobank (BBS-Fiocruz), initially called Fiocruz Covid-19 Biobank, opened in December of 2021, comprises Fiocruz' legacy in health research and action during the Covid-19 pandemic. After the ending of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern status, the scope of action expanded to include other public health problems and other viruses of interest. |
