Webinar brings together Fiocruz experiences in training on research integrity and ethics
In Brazil, there are more than 900 research ethics committees, which require qualified professionals in the field. To share training experiences in these areas, Fiocruz presents initiatives in the webinar “Educational opportunities in research ethics and integrity at Fiocruz”, to be held on 26 February, at 2:00 pm. It will be broadcast in Portuguese, with simultaneous interpretation into Spanish and from Spanish into Portuguese, on the VideoSaúde Distribuidora YouTube channel.
Educational opportunities in research ethics and integrity
The event is part of the monthly webinar series on ethics and integrity organised by The Global Health Network Latin America and the Caribbean (TGHN LAC), coordinated by the thematic working group led by the Etikos Foundation, from the Dominican Republic. The events cover topics ranging from the prevention of misconduct in research practices to the role of institutions in preventing such practices, as in the case of the Colombian Regulatory Framework. These webinars are spaces for exchange among professionals from different Latin American countries.
The Fiocruz experience in research ethics and integrity
On the 26th, representatives of the Fiocruz and National Institute of Cancer in Brazil (INCA) will speak about leading initiatives in the field. The first is Professor Mariana Conceição de Souza, who will present the Fiocruz Open Course on Research Ethics and Integrity, which she coordinates together with Sergio Rego, also coordinator of the Postgraduate Programme in Bioethics, Applied Ethics and Collective Public Health (PPGBIOS). In the webinar, Rego will discuss the PPGBIOS experience, an initiative that integrates bioethics and collective public health in postgraduate health education and is organised jointly by Fiocruz, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and the Federal Fluminense University (UFF). The INCA researcher Cíntia Lanzarini will share results from her study on research professionals’ perceptions of scientific integrity. Her research contributes to the development of institutional policies.
Fiocruz in the Brazilian scientific context on ethics and integrity
Fiocruz develops actions in the areas of research ethics and integrity through the Fiocruz Public Integrity Programme, which brings together institutional guidelines, oversight bodies and training courses. Examples include the Research Integrity Committee (CIP), which works alongside the Ombudsman’s Office and the Internal Affairs Office, as well as the Research Ethics Committees (CEP) and the Ethics Committees on the Use of Animals (CEUA), which oversee the Foundation’s activities. One of the most widely known guidelines is the “Fiocruz Guide to Research Integrity”, which provides guidance to researchers on good practices in scientific production.
