Fiocruz and TGHN LAC webinar will address prediction of dengue cases in 2025

Registration page of the Preparing for the 2025 dengue season: insights from predictive models”

On October 31st, at 1 p.m. (London Sumer Time), Fiocruz promotes the webinar called “Preparing for the 2025 dengue season: insights from predictive models”, in the online format, through the Vice-presidency of Education, Information and Communication of Fiocruz (VPEIC), via the Fiocruz Scientific Computing Program (PROCC), in partnership with the consortium The Global Health Network Latin America and the Caribbean (TGHN LAC).

Registrations are open via Zoom.

The webinar counts with simultaneous translation into English, Portuguese and Spanish, with presentations by PROCC researcher and Infodengue coordinator, Claudia Codeço, professor at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), Rachel Lowe, (Barcelona Supercomputing Centre /Spain), the professor at the University of Los Andes in Colombia, Mauricio Vegas, the professor at Fundação Getúlio Vargas and coordinator of Infodengue, Flávio Coelho and the technical consultant for the general coordination of arbovirus surveillance at the Brazilian Ministry of Health, Marcela Santos.

Growing concern about dengue fever around the world

The event focusses on predictions regarding the increase in dengue cases and other diseases caused by viruses transmitted, mainly by mosquitoes, known as arboviruses.

Researchers participating in Infodengue will talk about outbreak predictions in Brazil and how it is possible to apply the methodology to other locations. "Infodengue is an early warning system for the transmission of arboviruses, which has continuously contributed to planning responses to reduce the impact of these diseases on the Brazilian population. The webinar will discuss what predictive models of epidemics are and their use for action planning of coping", comments Claudia Codeço.

The event also launches a forecasting campaign for 2025 to standardise predictive models using the open-source platform, Mosqlimate.

PROCC coordinator, Ernesto Caffarena, explains that the webinar is part of a series of events carried out in partnership with TGHN LAC. “The idea of this webinar is that other researchers can use and adapt the content. It is part of the legacy of TGHN LAC. We want these events to be more than just meetings, but rather spaces to exchange innovative ideas, like Infodengue in Brazil, and apply them in other latitudes also affected by dengue. We hope that Fiocruz's partnership with The Global Health Network goes beyond borders and areas of study, thus improving our research and promoting the advancement of science in general", says Ernesto.

The panellists of the “Preparing for the 2025 dengue season: insights from predictive models” webinar are:

Rachel Lowe (mediator): leader of the global health resilience group and research professor at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), in Spain. Rachel is also a Royal Society of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Claudia Codeço: Fiocruz researcher for PROCC, in Brazil, Claudia is a co-founder of the Infodengue project and a specialist in climate-sensitive diseases since 2002.

Mauricio Vegas: professor at the University of Los Andes in Colombia and technical advisor on health and climate. With more than a decade of experience in quantitative epidemiology and epidemic preparedness, Mauricio has a doctorate in the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases.

Flavio Coelho: professor at FGV, in Brazil, and main investigator of the Mosqlimate project. Flavio is a specialist in the epidemiology of infectious diseases through the application of mathematics, statistics and data science.

Marcela Lopes Santos: technical consultant for the general coordination of arbovirus surveillance at the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Marcela is a professor and PhD in Public Health with an emphasis on Epidemiology.
