TGHN Fiocruz joins data science training publication for health researchers in low and middle income countries
We are delighted to announce the publication of our joint review , “Current Data Science Capacity Building Initiatives for Health Researchers in LMICs: Global and Regional Efforts”, in Frontiers in Public Health - Public Health Education & Promotion. This paper represents a collaborative effort by HDR UK, the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), and The Global Health Network (TGHN) Africa. It highlights the transformative role of data science in tackling public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and the criticality of related capacity building initiatives.
As the first of its kind, this review maps current data science capacity-building initiatives across LMICs, focusing on Africa, Asia, and Latin America & the Caribbean. These initiatives are designed to equip health researchers with critical data science skills to address priority health challenges. The review reveals a diverse range of programmes, many of which operate through collaborative hubs and consortia, fostering multidisciplinary networks by engaging the academic, government and private sectors. However, it also identifies gaps and notes that these efforts often lack cohesive strategic frameworks or standardised metrics to measure impact, hindering the ability to assess benefits, build on best practice and ensure long-term sustainability.
