Fiocruz participates in international meeting on surveillance of flu syndromes

The “Colloquium: Advances and Perspectives in the Surveillance of Flu Syndromes” organized by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) brought together experts from Brazil and abroad at PAHO headquarters in Brasília on Monday, 10 June, to identify advances, challenges and solutions related to the surveillance of respiratory viruses of public health importance in Brazil.

Among the speakers were representatives from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), such as the researcher from the Fiocruz Scientific Computing Program and member of The Global Health Network Latin America and the Caribbean, Marcelo Gomes, who presented some of Infogripe's strategies for monitoring and facing challenges in surveillance of flu syndrome in Brazil. Likewise, at the table on “Surveillance of flu syndromes in Brazil and the world”, was the head of the respiratory, exanthematous, enterovirus and emergencies and viral viruses' laboratory at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC) at Fiocruz, Marilda Siqueira, who also participated in the panel “Prevention and control measures in the context of respiratory viruses: Covid-19, influenza and other respiratory viruses of public health importance”.

Fiocruz researcher for Fiocruz Bahia, Manoel Barral Netto, was part of the Panel “Strategic approaches and challenges in emergencies due to respiratory viruses: Covid-19, influenza and other respiratory viruses of importance in public health”, where he spoke about the AESOP project, which is an early warning system of outbreaks with pandemic potential.

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation researcher from Fiocruz Mato Grosso do Sul unit, Júlio Croda, has participated in the panel on Post-Covid-19 Conditions in Brazil and the World, talking about the Epicovid 2.0 research that carries out a national survey to assess the real dimension of the pandemic of Covid-19 in Brazil. On the same panel, Rafaela Fortini, a Fiocruz researcher from Fiocruz Minas, was present to talk about long Covid (or Post-Covid conditions).
