Fiocruz launches international course on spatial modelling in R

From 8 to 14 July 2025, Fiocruz hosts the international course “Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Modelling in R: Applications for Infectious Diseases”. The training is coordinated by physician and researcher Marilia Sá Carvalho and taught by University of Toronto professor Patrick Brown. It is offered by the Postgraduate Programme in Public Health Epidemiology at the National School of Public Health Sergio Arouca (ENSP) and is supported by the Scientific Computing Programme at Fiocruz (PROCC), under the Vice-Presidency of Education, Information and Communication (VPEIC), in partnership with The Global Health Network Latin America and the Caribbean (TGHN LAC) and the Rio de Janeiro State Research Support Foundation (FAPERJ).

Course objectives – Spatial modelling in R

The course aims to enable students to use different spatial models to answer scientific research questions. Participants are also expected to understand geostatistical and area-based approaches and use R packages to fit models. Techniques for creating maps and other forms of visualisation will be taught, helping researchers present their results effectively.

The course is hybrid, with in-person participation at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC) and remote access available. It is intended for PhD students with prior knowledge of statistics and R programming.

Although applications are now closed, interested individuals may still participate as auditors, with the possibility of receiving a certificate of attendance issued by TGHN LAC. To register as an auditor, please send an email to fiocruz.tghn@fiocruz.br by 30 June, using the subject line: Ouvinte Curso Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Modelling in R.
