E-Vigilância 2025: Data Science in Public Health
From 25 to 27 November 2025, the city of Rio de Janeiro will host the fourth edition of E-Surveillance, one of Brazil’s leading events aimed at bringing together and strengthening the community of researchers, students, professionals, and entrepreneurs from various sectors interested in health surveillance technologies.
This edition of the congress will be held at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and will bring together researchers, health professionals, students, and public managers around a central theme: “Data Science in Epidemiological Surveillance: for what and for whom?” At this critical moment for Brazilian public health, as we face the direct impacts of epidemics, environmental disasters, and extreme events, it is urgent to discuss how science and technology can support strategic decision-making, save lives, and reduce inequalities.
The largest dengue epidemic ever recorded, the spread of Oropouche fever, the resurgence of yellow fever, and the health impacts of flooding in southern Brazil and severe drought in the north of the country are just some of the recent challenges that demand rapid, coordinated, and evidence-based responses. Data science applied to health surveillance has become an indispensable ally. However, more than just a technical tool, it should be regarded as an instrument of social justice, capable of guiding more efficient and equitable public policies aimed at the most vulnerable territories.
Key topics to be discussed:
- Applications of data science in the prevention of and response to health emergencies
- Technological innovations in epidemiological surveillance systems
- Ethical and political issues in the use of data in public health
- Institutional cooperation and the strengthening of Brazilian science
